W. Plummer Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Wilbert Stanley Plummer was born March 31, 1912 in Waltham, Mandeville, Parish of Manchester, Jamaica, West Indies. He was the youngest child of Alexander and Georgiana Forbes Plummer. After completing his elementary education, he learned tailoring - his lifelong profession. In 1948 he immigrated to the United States of America, and after a brief stay in Florida, where he met his wife, the late Dorothy Piner Plummer, he moved to Paterson, NJ, where he lived until his passing. Anyone who knew "Mr. Stanley" would not be surprised to learn that entrepreneurship and ambition characterized his approach to life. By the mid-fifties, he left a position at Stein's on Market Street to open his own business, Stanley's Custom Tailoring, on Main Street where it flourished for more than 30 years. Over the years, he also engaged in such endeavors as acquiring residential and commercial properties and running a car wash business. He was particularly proud of his own "workmanship" skills as he completed much of the repair, maintenance and renovation work on these properties with his own hands. Needless to say, he continually encouraged his children to adopt similarly independent paths. Retirement became a time to explore new challenges and Mr. Stanley discovered that he greatly enjoyed cruise vacations and went on several when in his 70's and 80's. One of his most cherished journeys was a trip across the country by train. Throughout his life, Mr. Stanley was an ardent fan of horse racing and used his skills of observation and strategy to appreciate the beauty and the complexity of the sport. Recently described as an unforgettable character of 96 going on 70, it's easy to see that Stanley Plummer remained proud and determined to remain in control of his own destiny despite the increasing effects of chronic illness. He left us on August 16, 2008. In addition to his parents and wife, he is predeceased by his sisters, Muriel, Rebecca, Rose, and Hilda, and daughter, Barbara. He is survived by a daughter, Evelyn, sons, Stanley A. and Trevor, granddaughters, Christine Plummer Stewart and Faith Plummer, grandsons, Christian, Kenneth, Wayne, great granddaughter, Jeanette, nephew, Keith Smith, and he is mourned by a host of other relatives and friends. Funeral service Saturday, 9:30 A.M. at Scillieri Funeral Home 351 Fifth Ave, Paterson, NJ, with burial to follow at Fair Lawn Cemetery, Fair Lawn. Visitation Friday, 7-9 P.M.
