Sylvia Hertudis Gordon, affectionately called (Aunt Gwen) went home to be with the Lord on the early morning of Sunday, April 17, 2022. She was the second of three children born to her parents on March 23, 1926 in the parish of St. James, Jamaica. She received both her early and primary education from the Montego Bay public school system where she excelled academically. But Sylvia, like many of her contemporaries, had to forfeit her dreams of maximizing her potentials academically because the opportunity to do so at the time were not there for her. However, being the person she was…bright, ambitious, resourceful and forward looking, she never allowed the difficult circumstances to puncture her dreams of creating for herself a sustainable path to a prosperous life. So, like the biblical Moses, she used what she had available to her, throwing herself wholeheartedly in becoming a skilled seamstress. As a young person she was fiercely independent, self assured and a believer in the principle of hard work, a disposition she maintained throughout her life. She was a firm believer in the spiritual tenet of loving your neighbor as you love yourself. A biblical reference she embraced and incorporated in her life daily by generously giving and extending herself to those around her. Sylvia was an active members of the Van Riper Ellis Broadway Baptist church in Fair lawn, where she and her predeceased husband, Herbert, served as members of the Board of Deacons. She also served as a member of the choir, and the women’s outreach ministry. A metaphor for Sylvia’s life would be “steady as a normal heartbeat”. However, this was until she met the self assured, young debonair Herbert Gordon, who’s expressed admiration and professed love upended and redirected the trajectory of her life. Being the purposeful person she was, without much hesitation said yes to marriage in 1954. The union produced four children: Clinton, Yvonne, Evadne and Alvin. Regrettably, Yvonne predeceased them in 1974. Sylvia looking for new opportunities for herself and family immigrated to the United States in 1965 with the rest of her family following soon after. An exemplary worker, she worked for many years at Lesney Products in Moonachie where she rose to the position of supervisor of her department until her retirement in 1992. She was an exceptional listener with a fantastic memory in tow. Even with declining years she maintained a sound mind which enabled her to think and process information quickly at a relatively high level. On the phone or visits, she was always engaging on the issues of the day, always extending conversations beyond the pro forma yes or no responses. Sylvia Gordon will always be missed and remembered for her giving spirit, love of family, and unwavering love of God. You ran a good race, and you have kept the faith, therefore ready is your reward. She leaves to mourn her passing, Sons: Clinton, Alvin and daughter Evadne. Grandchildren: Andrew, Sheril, Torique, Devon, Sheryl, Mary, Fritzroy, Great Grandchildren: Monique, Michael, Eion, Bobby, Skye, Fritzroy, Alton; Nieces: Yvonne, Delores, Gerine, Nephews: Ronnie, Errol, Kenrick, Winston and numerous other relatives and friends. Rest in God’s Eternal Peace! Even during times of social distancing, anyone who has suffered a loss deserves love and support more than ever before.
