August 31, 1935 - October 24, 2020
On October 24, 2020, the pearly gates of heaven opened for Hazel Josephine Mills. She was surrounded by family at the Arbor Ridge Nursing Home in Wayne, NJ. Hazel Josephine Mills was born August 31, 1935 to Amos & Carrie Miller in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. She grew up there and had a wonderful childhood on Pea Ridge Road in Polk County. Hazel accepted Christ at an early age. As a child, she was a member of Zion Grove Baptist Church. Not long after high school, Hazel relocated to New Jersey. There she met the love of her life, Wilmore (Smike) Mills. They were married on July 14, 1958. To this union, there were no biological children, however, they considered Barbara Willis their child. While in Paterson, Hazel joined Grace Chapel Baptist Church in Paterson under the leadership of Rev. Gregory Wilson, where she was a member of the choir. Hazel was never shy about praising the Lord. Anytime she had the chance, she would gladly get in front of the congregation with a mic and sing her favorite songs “I Don’t Know What You Come To Do” and “I Can Depend On God”. Out of all of her siblings, Hazel was the feistiest and the one with the most spunk. She was the one that would pray for you and also the one that would gladly curse you out (whether you deserved it or not). She lit up the room whenever she walked in. Hazel loved a good party. She loved to sing & dance. She also loved talking about her childhood home on Pea Ridge Road in Polk County. Around 2005 Hazel moved back to her hometown in North Carolina for a few years. During her time in North Carolina, she became a member of Green Creek Baptist Church where Rev. Arnie Twitty was her pastor. She used her voice for the Lord at that church as well. In 2018, Hazel moved back to New Jersey. Her family all loved and got a kick out of “Auntie” Hazel, leaves to cherish her memories Daughter, Barbara Willis of Paterson; Granddaughter Jasmine Bellamy of Paterson; Great Grandson Elias Crawford of Paterson; One brother, Ulysses D.
